Professor Liu Yan, Director of the Research Center of Biodiversity Conservation and Biosafety, Nanjing Institute of Environmental Science(NIES). When she joined NIES in 2002, most of her work has been focused on biological conservation, including biodiversity investigation and observation, restoration in ecological damage areas, and risk assessment of Genetically Modified Organisms. During the past 10 years, She has chaired or participated in more than 20 national and international programs, which contributed to biodiversity conservation and implementation of the Convention of Biological Diversity and the Protocols in China. In this regard, plenty of results of her research provide scientific basis for decision-making in biodiversity conservation and biosafety.

In 2007, she began to take part in the negotiation of CBD and CPB and attended COP, MOP, SBSTTA AND SBI meetings. Meanwhile, she was involved in compiling the National Report of Implementation of CBD and CPB of China. From 2019, she started a five-year national programme of biodiversity surveys, observations and assessments (2019-2023) for the whole country. Now, Her team is deeply involved in the preparations for COP15 and the negotiation process for the post-2020 framework.
